How to Write Your Autobiography

Anyone can tell their story when they know what questions to ask themselves. The answers are inside you. Read a question and the answer is there. It's easy. It's fun. There are no rules. Tell your story in your own voice. Only you can.
—The Remembering Site

If Not Now, When?

Many of us enjoy scrapbooking. But some of us express ourselves much better with words. In this day of DIY, two enterprising women have developed a set of tools designed to help anyone who wants to write and publish their life memories, experiences, memoirs, or autobiography but have been too overwhelmed to get started. The Remembering Site contains over one thousand evocative, story-telling questions to help lead you through the process. Here are a few examples:

  • Describe your family holidays.
  • Did you eat lunch at school,
or did you go home for lunch?
  • Do you remember your first kiss?
  • Describe your career.
  • What was the happiest moment of your life?
Suggested Chapter Headings

First, you’ll create a literary framework on which to hang your answers to the question prompts. It’s your life story to tell, and you can choose from various chapter headings at the Remembering Site.

1. Dedication
2. Your Family and Ancestry
3. The House of Your Growing Up
4. Childhood / NeighborhoodElementary School Years
5. Life In A Small Town or A Big City

7. High School
8. College

Faith and Remembering
Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, O descendants of Israel his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones. (I Chronicles 16:11-13 NIV)
You might also want to include your personal testimony of faith, a journal of specific answers to prayer, or other amazing acts of God in your life.

What to Expect While Writing

Co-founder Sarah McCue offers the following encouragement: Answer as you're inspired; go ahead and cry; you’re going to get bored; continue at your own pace, but set a pace; take your time so your children and grandchildren will know you completely; sit loosely in the writing saddle; let your sense of humor come through. Mary (mother of 10) at Owlhaven says, “I’d like you all to consider writing about your childhood home… If you moved a lot, it’s fine to pick one favorite house. What I want to hear are details that were important to you as a child: your secret hideout under the stairs... the way your mother washed your hair in the kitchen sink every Saturday night."

Mary at Owlhaven also says: "On Friday, July 20th, put your post up on your blog. I’ll put a Mr. Linkie up on my blog so that you can sign in with the address of your post… I think that reading each other’s childhood memories of ‘home’ will help us as parents get a better feel for the types of things that make childhood memorable for children.” HT to Carol at She Lives.

Helpful Questions
Under the chapter heading The House of Your Growing Up here are a few questions from the Remembering Site to help you with Owlhaven’s delightful challenge.

  • Do you have warm feelings about the childhood home you remember the most?
  • What did your home look like?
  • What was the color? Was it stone, wood-other?
    One story
    or two?
  • What did you look out onto?
  • What was your bedroom like?
  • Did you share it with your siblings, or was it cozy by yourself?

I like the faith journalling part -- well, they're all great ideas & I've got to go read Berber or Shag.
First Kiss...hmmm. I'd better be careful, my sister might read this... I'd better refrain ;)
Although, there was the boy I decked - his kiss was purely mercenary :)

These are just great ideas. I won't be able to participate in the Friday event since I will be gone. I love the idea of having memory prompts - I don't remember much of my childhood and its one reason why I blog today so I don't forget.

My first kiss... I know but I'm not going to tell ;)

Lol, my first kiss. I remember...he's still a friend now, but I have no romantic inclinations towards him now of course!!

Unfair question... I haven't ever kissed or been kissed. Keeping that one for my husband, whoever he might be. I enjoyed the thoughts and memories this brought up, although I will wait before writing anything definitive on my life...haven't lived long enough yet.

Leftcoastonlooker: You make me LOL! I don't think your sister comes here very much, so you're safe. :~)

Debd: Blogging is certainly a great way to keep a journal. I know others who blog expressly for that purpose. Good thinking!
(I wouldn't kiss and tell either.)

Sarah: So you and your husband are still in touch with him? Fun!

Thebeloved: Well then, you have a wonderful experience still to look forward to. Yes, live a little first, before you write your autobiography. :~)

This information is very helpful. As you know I am slowly trying to create memories on my blog for my children to look back at. I started with my husband and want to work through my whole family, including myself.

My first kiss? Oh yes, I remember being around 11. A boy from down the street asked me to be his girlfriend. I was 11! I just couldn't understand why people really enjoyed this? At the time, I thought it was pretty nasty. LOL!!!!

Ah... that weird first kiss. At this point, I'd rather not remember it!

These are some great guidelines! Thanks!

My review of the Creation Museum is up today, for anyone interested.

E-mom I've linked to your Christian Environment post, I hope that's OK. Hugs.

lori: Creating a blog biography is brilliant. You can even print it off if you want to.

LOL, kissing at 11 is pretty nasty! (Robbing the cradle too.)

laura: Sorry I brought it up!

jana: Thanks for your very interesting review of the Creation Museum. :~)

sarah: Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate your linky love. Hugs!

Thanks for the link to Owlhaven and the childhood home meme. It got my juices going.

My first kiss? Not so memorable or meaningful, but my first kiss with the man who is now my husband made me dizzy. (Okay, sorry for the sap, but it's true!)

Oh me...my first kiss. I can't say that I do. Isn't that awful. I was 17 and that was 24 years ago. Doesn't say much for the event does it?

Kimmy said...

First kiss? Well, I've only kissed two guys in my life: one was my first kiss and since then I've only been kissing my husband. I wish all of my kissing could have been saved for my husband. The guy I first kissed was named James . . . he was 7 years older than me. I was 20 years old and believe it or not, it was me who initiated it. Dumb. Anyways, he's happily married now and so am I. And no, I'm not in contact with him. He just happens to be a cousin of a good friend of mine so I get updates from her about that kind of stuff. By the way, I have lots of kisses for my boys too . . . but that's different.

e-Mom said...

Tami: ROFL! You two were meant to be together!!!

Julie: Robbing the cradle! 17? (Just kidding.)

Kimmy: How precious! You (almost) saved all your kisses for your husband. That's so special. I'm glad you shower your sons with affection. My son won't let me kiss him... but he does let me hug him! :~)
